VAT bank details held by HMRC – are they up to date?

Date posted: 11th Jun 2024

We understand that HMRC is altering a number of businesses to check the bank details held by HMRC.

Whilst we understand a letter from HMRC may be daunting or you may even possess a healthy level of scepticism, given the various scam letters that are circulating, you should check your VAT bank details regardless.

The reason HMRC are doing this, is because they have been made aware of various fraudulent attempts by scammers to change a business’ bank account details, to receive any VAT repayments. The scammers can do this via either paper form VAT484 or by the business’ online tax account.

Even if you have not received a letter from HMRC, we would urge you to ensure that your HMRC tax account is secure and that the static details (correspondence address), bank details etc held by HMRC are correct. You should also change your password to something complex and lengthy.
