Angela Mikola

Career History

I started my career in 2007, after graduating from Durham University. My first role was at EY in the Leeds Corporate Tax department. In 2011, after qualifying as a Chartered accountant, I moved to Garbutt & Elliott in York as part of the tax department. I remained there for 13 years, during which time it became part of the international firm Azets, and I was promoted through the ranks to Tax Director.

In 2024, I joined Clive Owen LLP as a Tax Director.

Experience and Expertise

I have spent my career advising my clients, which are predominantly owner managed and entrepreneurial businesses, on all their relevant tax matters, as well as dealing with the more day to day corporate tax compliance aspects. I love getting to know my clients and finding tax solutions tailored to their needs and ambitions.

I regularly advise on R&D, patent box, employee shares schemes, EIS/SEIS, capital allowances, group restructuring, EOTs and pre-sale planning.

Career Highlights

It is difficult to pick just one but providing the tax advice which enabled one of my clients to list on AIM was really rewarding.

More recently, a real highlight was successfully defending an HMRC R&D enquiry for a client, getting it closed in under 5 months.

Did you always want to be an accountant?

I always enjoyed problem solving and working with numbers, so I didn’t get much further past the “A” for Accountancy in the University careers fair.

I am also someone who enjoys saving money and likes a challenge, therefore a job in tax, where the rules change every year, seemed to be a great fit.

Hobbies and interests

As I have two young children, the majority of my weekends are spent touring York’s numerous play parks with the occasional cycle ride and picnic in the summer.

I enjoy doing dance and exercise classes such as Zumba. When I find the time, I also love catching up with friends over good food and wine.
